CGB CarbonTubes: Large pipes in CFRP

CGB – your specialist for large carbon pipes

CGB is your specialist for construction and manufacture of large carbon pipes. Expect the exceptional. We implement components with diameters ranging between 40mm and 4 meters and component lengths of up to 40 meters. Our machine park consists among others of winding machines and a world-wide unique patented tensile winding machine capable of fabricating components from 10 to 40 meters in length coreless or with core. With a vast range of connector systems the carbon components can be connected with components made of other materials.

CGB will attend your project from the definition of the requirements specification, through construction of prototypes, performance of testing cycles up to manufacture in series. We are looking forward to hearing from you and your specific requirements.

Features of CGB CarbonTubes:

Manufacture

  • Winding on core (e.g. steel, aluminium, styrofoam)
  • Tensile wrapping method coreless (on 0-degree layers ) or with core

Possible Component-Dimensions

  • Wrapping method:
    • Component diameter: 40mm up to 4 meters
    • Component lengths: 0.50 meters to 17.20 meters
    • Arbitrary wall thicknesses (e.g. 10mm)
  • Tensile wrapping method:
    • Component diameter: 40mm up to 1 meter
    • Component lengths: 10 meters up to 40 meters
    • Arbitrary wall thicknesses (e.g. 10mm)
  • Wrapping onto core guarantees defined interior diameter
  • When wrapping on core or tensile wrapping outer diameters can be wrapped or processed with high precision outer diameters.

Employed materials

  • Top grade carbon fibres (rovings) with 12,000 – 50,000 filaments (standard: 24,000 filaments) of notable manufacturers
  • Top-grade and high-temperature curing epoxy resins. In each case specifically optimised resin / catalyst systems are used.

Wrapping modes (angles)

  • Wrapping modes between 0° up to almost 90° (approx. 88° for radial winding) against the roll axis.
  • Adaptation to mechanical requirement of the individual component and/or the requirements of the complete system into which the component will be integrated:
    • Small winding angle, e.g. +/- 10° for bending proof and bending resistant pipes
    • Large winding angle, e.g. +/- 45° for pressure-resistant pipes
  • The buildup sequence can also be accomplished using layers with varying angles so the completed component possesses different well-balanced properties (high bending and pressure resistance)
  • After wrapping the epoxy resin is hardened in temperature-controlled ovens. This is possible for components up to 40 meters length and diameters of up to 0.90 meters.

Surface design

  • A glossy surface may be obtained either by standard wrapping and hardening of resin or also through application of special coating.
  • A matted surface may be obtained by application of peel ply or milling. These surfaces are particularly suited for further processing.
  • UV coating
  • Appearance
    • Paint frosted / glossy
    • Radial wrapping (approx. 88°) plus varnish
    • Optically effective windings may be applied to the component as supplementary layer.

Connector technologies

  • Pin-mounting: Automated pin-mounting procedure of Teufelberger („T-IGEL“). In this process the outside of an insert or flange is populated with pins. In the course of further processing these semi-finished products are directly incorporated into the laminate by a wrapping procedure of CGB to achieve optimal positive locking.
  • Gluing methods with flange: CGB employs a gluing method patented by IMA in Dresden which achieves 100% coverage of the adhesive gap which guarantees an extremely high mechanical load-carrying capacity.
  • Direct gluing of components
  • Laser-bonding of components

Processing

  • Milling (with portal milling machine made by Zimmermann)
  • Drilling
  • Gluing
  • And further methods of processing
